Mobile commerce was born in 1997 when the first mobile-phone enabled Coca Cola vending machines (accepting payment via SMS text messages) were installed in the Helsinki area in Finland. In the same year, the first mobile-phone-based banking service was launched by Merita Bank of Finland, also using SMS. (It was only in 1998 when the first sales of digital content to mobile phones was made possible)

Now to 2012 – Mobile Commerce and Banking continues to grow. Mobile Monday Switzerland has invited some industry-leading speakers to present their products and strategies, and to give an update on state of the industry. Join us on April 23rd for what promises to be a very interesting event.

Quick summary

Augmented Reality (AR) blends digital data with the real world in context and for use by a person in possession of any device with sensors and capable of displaying information in real time. AR was the focus of research laboratories and implemented in highly controlled professional environments long before it became popular. Today, using the latest generation of smartphones and tablets, users can now experience semi-immersive environments — they can see information associated with a place and natural features of the real world.

In this meeting, we will have the opportunity to hear about the latest developments around AR Today, at the AR Today conference.

- How are people using mobile AR?

- What does it take to developer mobile AR experiences?

These are the themes for the AR Today sessions (see full agenda for the AR Today conference). In addition, leading researchers working on the Augmented Reality of the future, also gathering in Basel for the annual International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality, will join us and give us a sneak peak at what they are working on.

Join us for short presentations by your chair for the meeting, Christine Perey co-founder of Mobile Monday Switzerland, invited speakers and professional networking cocktail hosted by CeBIT and empea, organizers of the AR Today conference.

Alexander Gellner
Sanne Stijve, Senior Sales Engagement Manager, Mobile Broadband Practice @ Ericsson AG

Next-generation networks are starting to be rolled out everywhere – mobile networks are being upgraded with LTE, and new fiber networks are already in the ground in many countries and cities. Is this merely another wave of technological innovation, or is it driven by real end-user demand? What do we need these networks for? How can network operators make money in spite of the huge investments they have to take for building them? Who will benefit most from these networks?

Alexander has 15 years of experience in the ICT market. He started his career at Gartner doing strategic consulting work in the ICT industry; this was followed by a total of 7 years at mobile operators Telefonica in Germany and Orange in Switzerland where he had responsible positions in Market Intelligence and Consumer Marketing. At Ericsson, Alexander was in charge of Strategic Marketing and Business Development in Switzerland and now heads up the Marketing department in Western and Central Europe.

With his extensive expertise in radio access technologies, Sanne helps operators across Europe with the evolution of their mobile access networks: how to cope with ever-increasing demand for capacity, how to improve speeds and performance, how to handle new devices such as smartphones and tablets, how to maximise revenues or reduce OPEX are among his favourite topics.

Alexander Gellner
Matthias Sala, CEO of Gbanga

HTML5 has become a major trend in the web sphere in general and in the mobile area in particular. There is not only a demand for standardized and uniformed website development to reduce complexity and cost, but also the need to reach as many mobile users without having to implement native apps for highly proprietary platforms.

While native apps have the advantage to work fully offline on a device, HTML5 web apps require a more reliable and fast data network like 4G. This is especially true for entertainment purposes like in multiplayer games.

In his talk, Matthias presents how modern apps can work completely in the browser and what impact that has on the underlying data network.

Matthias Sala designs games that blur fiction with reality. He founded Gbanga in 2007 to develop an innovative mixed-reality gaming platform for mobile phones, with a focus on bringing the excitement and immersion of console game to everyday situations. The platform and games running on Gbanga have since been nominated for international game award. Matthias studied computer science at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and Stellenbosch University. He did research at Siemens Smart Home Lab and at Xerox PARC in Palo Alto with projects including activity-based advertising and RFID-supported recycling. Besides working at Gbanga, Matthias organizes industry events such as the SuperHappyDevFlat and StartupCamp Switzerland. He is also a founding member and president of the International Game Developer Association (IGDA) Swiss Chapter and founding member of Mobile Monday Switzerland. He won the Sentient Future Award and the Swiss venture leaders prize.

MoMo Zurich Where next for Mobile-Content and VAS revenues?

MoMo #23 May 9: Where next for Mobile-Content and VAS revenues?

Location: Technopark, Zurich

It is not such a long time ago where Digital Companies made millionsof dollars of revenues with selling ringtones and wallpapers to mobile customers. But where are those companies now? With the growing numbers of smart phone owners those companies have disappeared from the landscape and new kinds of mobile content have appeared such as music downloads or mobile apps. But how sustainable are those types of content. Will they still exist in a few years or will they also disappear like ringtones? And what will happen with the network operators. In the time of Digital Companies they earned good money with SMS/MMS but today with smart phones people are using email and the mobile internet instead.

How are the interests for mobile content growing and evolving amongst consumers? What to keep as Value Added Service for end consumers? How will mobile operators contribute in the value chain? How have mobile applications changed over time?

Join the discussion at our next Mobile Monday event and hear where mobile-operators should be looking to generate new revenue streams out of VAS if/when the app craze will be over?

Speaker:

“App as Mobile Content in VAS”

by Marco Rohr, Senior Product Manager by net-m AG
