Mobile Applications – Forum and Bootcamp

Expanding beyond our Monday event format, we are very happy to bring you a very special mobile industry event.

In cooperation with Mid-Atlantic Diamond Ventures and Temple University, this event is designed to inform on the “state of mobility” and more importantly, the future: trends in platforms and technology, a review of key industries increasing their use of mobile apps (healthcare, transportation, media, education), critical players in the field, and how mobility is impacting economic development in our region and elsewhere.

The event will also inform on the relevant aspects of mobile application development: how does the app go from initial concept to final product? What are the technology development/issues/resources, costs to develop, funding of mobile apps, branding and marketing. What supports are available locally? How does a mobile app break out and gain traction in such a crowded space?

We’re also happy to provide an important value add aspect of this event – an opportunity to discuss mobile with local experts in a small group format.

“What’s Next in the Mobile Evolution”

December 3rd, 2010

Mobile Monday Mid-Atlantic invites you to attend an important Philadelphia-area mobile industry event – “What’s Next in the Mobile Evolution” – organized by the BizTech@Wharton Conference on December 3, 2010.

The BizTech@Wharton Conference has been an annual event run by Wharton MBA students since 1996. Keynote speakers have included top executives and industry leaders such as MC Hammer, Entrepreneur & Music Artist; Stephen C. Savage, CIO, CA, Inc.; Stephen Elop, CEO, Nokia, Ahmed Mahmoud, CIO, AMD, Glenn Britt, President and CEO, Time Warner Cable.

This year, BizTech@Wharton is working in collaboration with Mobile Monday Mid-Atlantic to bring you over 30 panelists, moderators and keynote speakers.

This conference is one of the largest MBA technology conferences and a major industry event in the Philadelphia area.

The theme of this year’s conference is What’s Next in the Mobile Evolution.

The conference will explore ways in which mobile technology is transforming the business landscape and the various ways that businesses in all industries are adapting their strategies to channel the promise of mobile technologies.

BizTech@Wharton panels will include:

  • mHealth and eBanking…mobile technology has the potential to reduce costs and increase efficiencies – will they be incremental or game changing?
  • Digital Content…from smartphones to ipads/tablets how will the new streaming revenue pie be split? And who gets a piece within the mobile ecosystem.
  • Location Based Services (LBS)…LBS offers exciting opportunities to improve the contextual experience and increase revenues.  Estimates for LBS growth are staggering, how will LBS providers and value chain partners stay ahead of this rapidly evolving market?
  • Mobile Advertising…as consumer lifestyles become increasingly more mobile centric companies must consider the mobile channel as a means to reaching customers in the context of both time and location.
  • Mobile Apps…given the exponential growth anticapated over the next three years, and understanding the value of mobile applications is critical to both existing as well as emerging businesses. How will companies use mobile applications to sell and communicate with customers? Should companies develop both internet and mobile platforms?

Recap: Survival of the Fittest

Local entrepreneurs, mobile application developers, wireless mobility executives, and technology professionals filled the University of the Arts Hamilton Hall as Mobile Monday Mid-Atlantic launched its 2010-2011 event season by tackling the controversial topic of the evolving mobile application ecosystem. Titled “Survival of the Fittest: Is your mobile app strategy DOA?” attendees heard a number of perspectives from mobile industry experts on the key issues facing businesses as they develop their mobile strategies.

Mobile Monday President Chuck Sacco welcomed the crowd and explained that attendees could provide feedback and submit feedback and questions in real-time using a beta version of Yorn on their mobile browser.

Issues addressed included:

  • Mobile Web vs. Mobile Apps: which will rule?
  • Is an app the right solution for everyone?
  • Are there are some cases where an app might make more sense?

The evening was keynoted by industry analyst Shiv K. Bakhshi, Ph.D. and moderated by renowned industry commentator Steve Smith. Bakhshi, Founder and CEO of Mobile Perspectives, kicked off the event’s content with a presentation titled “Mobility, Convergence & Confusion: Is there an app for that?” Bakhshi delivered a compelling presentation that helped provide the audience with industry and mobile device technology trends, discussed the convergence of devices, outlined the role of mobile platforms, analyzed evolving consumer behaviors, and discussed a few perspectives on how to decide on the best path to take for any business.

Bakhshi then gave way to the panel moderator, Steve Smith, Mobile Insider columnist for Mediapost and organizer of the OMMA Mobile shows. Following Bakhshi’s lead, Smith led a vibrant panel of industry experts who analyzed and attacked issues head-on. The panel included:

  • Kevin Griffin, Consuiltant, Chariot Solutions

  • Mark Spence, co-founder and General Manager, Transmogrify

A highlight of some of the questions addressed from direct audience participation included:

  • Right now the app development world appears very fragmented do you see a dominant player emerging to compete for market share and market consolidation?
  • What impact do you expect the Microsoft Windows OS will have over the next year, Also Is a Microsoft-Nokia alliance likely?
  • Is there a source of information associating mobile platforms with target app consumer demographics? For example, what platform do you target a fitness app versus a business intel app?
  • Do large enterprises have to implement a mobility platform so that legacy host apps can be extended effectively to a multi OS mobile device user community?

The Marketing and Mobile Technology event was held in partnership with Chariot Solutions and appRenaissance.
